Message physics, is true given a controlled environment with specific variables. For what you are trying to figure out, you would have to include within the calculations the fact that heat is going to act differently with different size tires, the weight of the car will be more spread out on the larger tire, and in different proportions, as well as getting as detailed as examining both wider and narrower tires under acceleration under different conditions (i.e. even if surface area is the same on a still tire, the surface area of a wider tire being potentially crushed by the accleration forces may infact have a larger surface area at that time then the narrower tire)... the list goes on... and on... and on. If you really want to understand, go get a 6 inch and a 8.5 inch wide set of tires and YOU TELL US WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE REAL WORLD. Might actually be pretty interesting doing different trials with specific launch rpm's and approximate time of loss of traction.
